DESCRIPTION:Monday\, June 29th – 5:30 – 7:45 pm \nJoin us for an evening hike for women and non-binary folks.  \nWe’ll hike a figure-8 loop of 4 miles at a moderate pace\, exploring the park’s beautiful woodland trails and old-growth meadows. We’ll cross a couple of streams and climb a hill or two – a nice challenge! \nThis hike is a dedicated\, welcoming space for women and non-binary folks to enjoy trails together. \nMeeting place: We’ll begin from the Sherwood side. Cromwell Valley Park has two entrances. Please use the first entrance off Cromwell Bridge Road (if coming from the Beltway) – 2002 Cromwell Bridge Road\, Parkville\, MD 21234. Cromwell is undergoing construction\, and the main parking areas are closed. Please park on the left just after driving through the white gates\, and meet at the signage board. If there are no spots left\, a large grass lot is available just a little farther on\, to the left. \nCost: $5 per person\, with all funds supporting Cromwell Valley Park Council\, Inc. \nWhat to bring: Please wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots and bring at least 16 oz. of water. Hiking poles can be helpful for stream crossings. Tick repellent is also recommended. \nHike led by CPVC volunteer\, Margie Stewart. DESCRIPTION:May 15\, 2026 – 6 pm – 8 pm – in the Sherwood House \n$10 p/person drinks and desserts provided – Ages 18+ \nJen will discuss the history of humans and fire in the eastern United States and the importance of fire in maintaining healthy ecosystem function and to complete plant life cycles.  She will explain the process of conducting a controlled burn from the planning phase to implementation as well as the importance of controlled fire burns in the Southern Blue Ridge region which has many of the same forest types found in Maryland and how forests like those in the Cromwell Valley Park could benefit from having fire reintroduced to them \nBackground – Jenifer Mallinoff works for The Nature Conservancy as a southern Blue Ridge Burn Crew Leader in Asheville\, North Carolina.  Jen has a Masters of Science in Biology from Appalachian State University.  Jen has been a member of the Southern Blue Ridge Burn crew since 2021 and she now leads a crew in planning\, preparing and executing controlled fire burns.  Jen is also responsible for monitoring protocol for wildlife activity in restored forest sites.
