DESCRIPTION:Tuesday\, August 11th at 5:45 pm \nJoin us for an advanced-level 5 mile hike on the upper trails of Cromwell Valley Park.     Enjoy an evening  hike at a moderate pace from the Sherwood House up to highests elevation in the park and then back to the Sherwood House.     Please only register if physically able to hike ascending and descending elevation changes and through rocky and wet stream crossings.    Some refreshments will be served after the hike as part of this event. \nDistance:  5 miles\nElevation Change:  615 feet\nLevel of Difficulty: Advanced\nTime:  2 to 2.5 Hours \nMeeting place: We’ll begin from the Sherwood side. Cromwell Valley Park has two entrances. Please use the first entrance off Cromwell Bridge Road (if coming from the Beltway) – 2002 Cromwell Bridge Road\, Parkville\, MD 21234. Cromwell is undergoing construction\, and the main parking areas are closed. \nPlease followign parking signs on the left just after driving through the white gates.    We will meet at the picnic tables by the tent in front of the Sherwood House. \nCost: All funds supporting Cromwell Valley Park Council\, Inc.\n$5.00 – Existing CVPC Members\n$10.00 – Non-Members\nSpecial:  Purchase a NEW $15 individual or $20 family membership on this registration page and your hike is FREE! \nWhat to bring: Please wear sturdy hiking shoes or boots and bring at least 16 oz. of water. DESCRIPTION:September 18\, 2026 – Dr. Wayne Bell \n“The Chesapeake Working Landscape: Past\, Present\, and a Hopeful Future” \nA history of land use on the Chesapeake Bay watershed\, from pre-colonial times to the present\, and insights that land use changes provide for bird conservation. \nBackground – Dr. Bell is Senior Associate and former Director of the Washington College Center for Environment and Society.  A native of Silver Spring\, MD\, he graduated from the University of Miami\, Florida\, and earned his Ph.D. from Harvard University where E.O. Wilson infected him with a lasting love of all things ecological.  Retired since 2008\, Dr. Bell continues his passion for birds and teaching through the Maryland Ornithological Society Youth program (YMOS)\, Talbot County Bird Club\, and the Chesapeake Forum continuing education program. \n6:00 – 8:00 pm  in the Sherwood House    $10 p/person drinks and desserts provided – Ages 18+

SUMMARY:Birding with Celebrity Guide - Kojo Baidoo
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, September 19th from 8 am – 10 am \nJoin us for the height of fall migration with celebrity birder\, Kojo Baidoo.   Winner of the World Series of Birding in 2022 and has been featured in NPR when his Princeton team (Tiger Shrikes) spotted 205 species of birds in a 24-hour period! \nKojo has had a passion for nature and the environment for as long as he can remember. After reading a book about birds of prey in the first grade and seeking out as many more field guides as he could find in the library\, he developed a fascination with birds and never looked back. Over the years\, he has come to appreciate each and every species he sees\, and his list of favorite birds grows with every minute he spends outside. \nKojo attended Princeton University in New Jersey\, earning a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. During his college years\, he was able to travel for research internships and semesters abroad\, building bird lists in countries such as Mozambique\, South Africa\, and Panama. He completed a senior thesis on the social behavior of black vultures at Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in Pennsylvania\, and also served as president and social media chair of the Princeton Birding Society\, where he competed in (and won!) the World Series of Birding with his college classmates. After graduating in spring 2024\, Kojo spent the fall working in Cape May as an Interpretive Naturalist\, and then spent 2025 working as a Hubbard Fellow for The Nature Conservancy in Nebraska. \nMore than anything\, Kojo loves sharing his passion for birds with others\, both in-person and online (@kojobirder on Instagram). He is now back in Baltimore\, and is looking forward to reconnecting with the birding community here! \nMeeting place: We’ll begin from the Sherwood side. Cromwell Valley Park has two entrances. Please use the first entrance off Cromwell Bridge Road (if coming from the Beltway) – 2002 Cromwell Bridge Road\, Parkville\, MD 21234. Cromwell is undergoing construction\, and the main parking areas are closed. Please park on the left just after driving through the white gates\, and meet at the signage board. If there are no spots left\, a large grass lot is available just a little farther on\, to the left. \nWhat to bring: Please wear sturdy hiking shoes and bring water and your binoculars. \nCost: $10 per person\, with all funds supporting Cromwell Valley Park Council\, Inc.\, as well as to cover a stipend for our celebrity guide. \nGeneral Conditions:  \n\nRegistration for this event constitutes the acceptance of the WAIVER OF LIABILITY\nNo birders under the age of 18 (so sorry!!!)\nNo pets allowed.\nNo alcohol\, tobacco nor recreational drugs allowed.\nBe courteous and respectful of all birders.   We will walk at the pace of the slowest birder.\nIf you pack it in\, you pack it out.\n\nFor more information\, please email Mia Walsh at mia@cromwellvalleypark.org. \n
